More News: Lions CB Taken to Hospital Following Significant Arm Injury

Lions suffered two significant defensive injuries during their 45-31 divisional-round playoff loss to the Washington Commanders on Saturday.

Cornerback Amik Robertson broke his left arm on the Lions' second defensive snap, requiring surgery, while safety Ifeatu Melifonwu left the game with a hamstring injury.

The injury to Robertson occurred early in the game, on just the second defensive play. As Robertson attempted to tackle Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin on a screen pass, Lions linebacker Jack Campbell inadvertently collided with him, causing Robertson to sustain a serious injury.

Robertson remained on the field for a few moments, visibly shaken, before being helped off by trainers. Although he walked off under his own power, he had to keep his arm immobilized.

The Lions' defense, already reeling from a series of injuries throughout the season, was hit hard by Robertson's loss.

The team had already been without several key players: defensive starters Marcus Davenport (torn triceps), Derrick Barnes (torn MCL and PCL), Aidan Hutchinson (broken leg), Alim McNeill (torn ACL), and Carlton Davis III (broken jaw), along with backup defensive tackle Kyle Peko and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez. Melifonwu and linebacker Alex Anzalone also spent time on injured reserve.

These absences contributed to a defense that allowed over 30 points in four of its last six games, and Saturday was no exception, with the Lions forcing just one punt and allowing 481 net yards of offense.

Robertson, who had been a key contributor since joining the Lions in the offseason, had played in all 17 regular-season games and made four starts. In his first season with Detroit, he recorded eight passes defensed, three forced fumbles (a career-high), and had a solid presence in the secondary.

Prior to joining the Lions, Robertson spent four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, starting 21 games and recording four interceptions, two sacks, and 15 passes defensed.

The Commanders converted four of five fourth-down attempts, including a pivotal fourth-and-2 from the Detroit 5-yard line early in the fourth quarter. With the Lions having 12 men on the field, Trevor Nowaske ran onto the field for the play, but no one left, allowing Washington to score a touchdown two plays later and take a 38-28 lead.

The Lions' injury woes ultimately caught up with them, leaving their defense vulnerable in a high-scoring affair, and their playoff hopes dashed.
