The New York Yankees have made several moves to improve their roster after losing outfielder Juan Soto via free agency. However, the departure of second baseman Gleyber Torres still leaves a significant hole on the infield. Could general manager Brian Cashman fill it by trading for Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes?
While X user MLB Scoops said Hayes requested a trade out of Pittsburgh, several Pirates insiders have rebuked that report. That didn't stop ESPN New York radio host and YES Network announcer Michael Kay from discussing how Hayes could fit in the Bronx, though.
"Something has happened that I think solves a problem for the Yanks," Kay said on Thursday. "Ke'Bryan Hayes, Charlie Hayes' son, who's signed to a long-term, very, very reasonable deal with the Pirates has asked to be traded. Ke'Bryan Hayes is a defensive magician at third base. His hitting is not what it should be, but he's obviously not happy in Pittsburgh.
"I talked to Charlie when the Yankees were in Pittsburgh a couple years ago, and he was like scratching his head about some of the things they do in Pittsburgh with the hitters, whatever the case may be. And now it comes out that Ke'Bryan has demanded a trade. If I'm the Yankees, I'm calling the Pirates and going, 'What do you want?'"
Kay went on to say he doesn't think New York will make any significant moves unless it can find a trade partner for starting pitcher Marcus Stroman. However, he ends his argument by saying Hayes "solves a lot of problems" for a Yankees squad in need of another infielder.
Hayes will be 28 years old during the 2025 season. He won a Gold Glove Award in 2023 and is in the middle of an eight-year, $70 million deal. He's under contract until at least the 2029 campaign.
