3 weeks ago 3

Love Island star Maura Higgins has confirmed she no longer speaks to her dad.

The reality star opened up in a chat with Celebs Go Dating star Paul Brunson, saying that when she was growing up her father Seamus wasn’t around that much because he was working. However, it was after she was on Love Island in 2019 that they fell out.

Speaking on the We Need To Talk podcast, she explained the pair rowed on the phone and that it was “horrendous”. Afterwards, they stopped speaking.

The Irish TV star went on: “It was after I did Love Island. It’s kind of a weird… We haven't spoken in a few years now." Maura, 33, explained: "My dad spoke to me not very nice. I'm not just saying it was just a bit of an argument. It was horrendous where I physically couldn't breathe after the phone call.

"And I thought to myself, 'I wouldn't let a partner talk to me like that. I wouldn't let my friends talk to me like that. I'm not going to let my dad talk to me like that’.”

Maura said one of the reasons for their lack of a relationship is that she felt her father - who split from her mother Sharon - wasn’t there for her at a point when she needed him. She told Paul: “I think if I dig deep, I don't think I've ever forgiven my dad for not being there for me when my best friend passed away. And he wasn't there for me."

She paid tribute to him in a moving post on special media on the anniversary of his death this year. She said: "Another year without you but I know you see and guide me. I miss you more than you will ever know."
