Man Adds Different Vegetable to Soup for First Time—Backfires Horribly

A TikTok user went viral after sharing footage of a vegetable soup that turned bright blue—and the reason why has left internet users in hysterics.

The hilarious video, shared on Monday under the username @meowmeowgravy, shows the disappointed poster reacting to his soup, before turning the camera to the actual meal, a hearty veggie soup with pasta and beans, that would have looked inviting had it not be entirely blue.

"I guess next time I won't use purple cabbage in my soup..." reads layover text in the clip.

However, the soup's unusual color didn't stop the poster from eating it, as the caption explains: "Still tasted good, but man is the look off putting..."

Over 2.9 million users have watched the clip so far and 212,700 have liked it, while thousands of people have left their opinions in the comments.

Brioche Bread said: "This is a kid hack in disguise. I'm confident my picky eater would try this for the plot."

Steve added: "Next time soak the cabbage in water for 30 min before you decide to use it. it will leech the purple/blue dye into the water.. just drain, rinse and dry and you will have cabbage that doesn't stain."

Another user, Ann Russell, wrote: "Vinegar or lemon will bring it back to an appealing color."

Is it true that acidic substances can contrast cabbage juices? The Birmingham Museums' website explains that the red pigment in cabbage, scientifically known as anthocyanin, happens to be a chemical that does change color.

This chemical changes color based on the pH (level of acidity) it's exposed to. When in a strongly acidic environment, its color fades, becoming pink/red. In a basic alkaline environment, this molecule becomes a completely different color.

Cabbage juice is a known natural pH indicator, often used to test imbalances in agriculture, environmental science, medical diagnostics and in the food industry. Other natural pH indicators include turmeric, beetroot and blueberries.

Some users compared the cabbage stained soup to the iconic Bridget Jones's Diary's blue string leak soup from the 2001 movie.

RichBitRiah added: "Was Bridget Jones coming for lunch."
