America's favorite holiday treat has been revealed—and the states are divided.

With winter holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa just weeks away, Americans may be deciding which sweet treats to bake and share with loved ones.

A new survey, commissioned by Pillsbury Baking and conducted by Talker Research, asked 5,000 people across all 50 states about their favorite festive goody.

And overall, the pie won out, with 22 states declaring it was their favorite sweet treat on the holidays. This was followed fairly closely by cookies, which 17 states labeled their favorite.

Four states—Idaho, Colorado, North Carolina and Illinois—couldn't choose between pie and cookies, and were each tied on the vote.

And when it came to Alaska, Virginia, Oklahoma and Wyoming, the states went a different direction, opting for cheesecake as their favorite.

Meanwhile, Oregon and Kentucky were evenly split between pies and fudge, while Georgia was unique, where cakes and cupcakes won out.

Elsewhere, the survey found that those living in Montana are most likely to receive the gift of homemade sweets this year, as 52 percent said they would be giving out their baked goods as presents.

And in Virginia, a whopping 72 percent said homemade baked goods are the best possible gift to receive. Utah natives were most likely to bring cookies to a neighbor, while New Jersians were most likely to bake for a shelter or local charity.

But in Georgia, respondents were found to be the most likely to pass off store-bought goods as their own cooking, and West Virginians were most likely to describe their kitchen as "chaos."

Eric Mills, marketing director for Pillsbury Baking, said it was "touching to see holiday baking cherished as a tradition across the country," adding the company was "honored to be part of these festive moments."

"From gifting cookies to loved ones to baking brownies for cozy movie nights, creating treats together is one of the sweetest ways to celebrate the season."

Tradition featured heavily in the survey, with 34 percent of respondents revealing they still leave food out for Santa Claus each year—and most often, cookies were the treat of choice for the man in the red suit.

"It's heartwarming to see holiday baking traditions resonate with new generations, eager to recreate the festive memories they grew up with," added Mills.

"There's such joy to be found in baking together, and we're proud to help keep these traditions alive in a way that brings families together to create new memories in the holiday kitchen."

Talker Research surveyed 5,000 Americans (state-by-state); the survey was commissioned by Pillsbury Baking and administered and conducted online by Talker Research between October 24 to November 1, 2024.
