Matthew Perry was ready to settle down before his death in October 2023, mom Suzanne Morrison revealed on the one-year anniversary of his passing.
“He talked about, ‘It’s time for me to have a wife and it’s time for me to have children and I want that,'” the former press secretary, 76, told Savannah Guthrie on Today on Monday, October 28. “A dog running around the house.”
Suzanne, who did the interview alongside Matthew’s stepfather, Keith Morrison, and sisters Caitlin, Emily and Madeline, revealed that the Friends star was “so desperate for a solution” after he battled addiction for many years. At the time of his death at 54 years old, Matthew was undergoing ketamine infusion therapy to treat anxiety and depression. Suzanne said that her son “didn’t appreciate the frightening aspect of this medication.”
Matthew was found unresponsive in the jacuzzi at his Pacific Palisades home on October 28, 2023, after an apparent drowning. However, the Fools Rush In star’s cause of death was later ruled as the “acute effects of ketamine.” His last scheduled treatment was a week and a half before his death.
An investigation into Matthew’s death discovered that the ketamine he had ingested prior to his drowning was not legally prescribed by a doctor. On August 15, Dr. Mark Chavez, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, Erik Fleming, Kenneth Iwamasa, who was Matthew’s live-in assistant, and Jasveen Sangha, a woman known as “the Ketamine Queen,” were arrested for their involvement in his death.
Chavez, 54, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine on October 2. Iwamasa, 59, and Fleming, 54, also both pleaded guilty in the case. Meanwhile, Sangha, 41, and Plasencia, 42, pleaded not guilty.
While Matthew never settled down and got married before he died, he came close with on-off girlfriend Molly Hurwitz. The pair got engaged in November 2020 after starting their romance in 2018. However, they split for good in June 2021 without ever making it to the altar.
“Sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them,” Matthew said in a statement at the time. “I wish Molly the best.”
Molly, 33, remembered Matthew in a since-deleted Instagram post after his death.
“He would love that the world is talking about how talented he was,” she wrote on October 30. “And he really was very talented. As the Friends reunion was approaching [in 2021], we rewatched the show together. ‘F–k, I was so good!!! … See what I did there???’ We rewound and studied scenes. Our respect and appreciation of humor is something that connected us. Being with him as he rediscovered his brilliance was magical.”
Molly also reflected on the struggles in their relationship, adding, “While I loved him deeper than I could comprehend, he was complicated, and he caused pain like I’d never known. No one in my adult life has had a more profound impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry. I have tremendous gratitude for that, for everything I learned from our relationship.”
She concluded, “Matty, I feel relief that you are at peace.”
