The Toronto Blue Jays began their offseason by whiffing on a few big free agents. They were reportedly in the race to acquire Juan Soto, Teoscar Hernández, Corbin Burnes, and Max Fried but came up empty-handed each time.
Toronto eventually landed the highly coveted Anthony Santander on a massive contract, but the team might not be done adding there.
MLB.com's Mark Feinsand recently listed the Blue Jays as the favorites to land three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer this winter.
"A number of teams have been loosely connected to Scherzer this winter, though the Blue Jays appear to be the most serious about signing him, sources said," Feinsand wrote. "Scherzer would join Kevin Gausman, José Berríos, and Chris Bassitt in the rotation for Toronto, which also has Bowden Francis and Yariel Rodríguez among its starting options.
"The Blue Jays were one of the finalists for Roki Sasaki before he signed with the Dodgers, so it's no surprise that Toronto would still be in the market for another starter."
On paper, it doesn't seem like the Blue Jays need to add much starting pitching, but the three-time Cy Young winner might be the exception.
A player like Jack Flaherty would cost nearly $100 million to acquire. While signing him would improve Toronto, it's not feasible.
Signing Scherzer will likely cost around $15 million, per Spotrac, and the Blue Jays will likely get solid production from the legendary ace.
Nothing in Scherzer's game has pointed toward him rapidly declining. He's faced injuries, but when healthy, he's looked like an above-average big-league arm.
