Mets Could Pivot To $200 Million Star If Pete Alonso Betrays New York

The New York Mets are reportedly the top team in the Pete Alonso sweepstakes. But the two parties haven't come to a deal yet, so there's definitely room to be concerned for the Mets.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently reported there were eight teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox, in the Alonso sweepstakes. Nightengale also reported Alonso is looking for a longer deal, with his agent using Prince Fielder's nine-year, $214 million contract with Detroit Tigers in 2012 as a comparison to the deal Alonso wants.

More than likely, nobody in baseball will give the Mets slugger that much money over nearly a decade. The Mets certainly won't be giving him a nine-year deal.

So if Alonso bolts and chooses a five or six-year contract with a team like the Red Sox, Blue Jays, or Seattle Mariners, what will the Mets do?

One route New York could take is pursuing star infielder Alex Bregman.

While owner Steve Cohen may not be okay with giving Alonso a five or six-year deal, he would likely be fine with giving Bregman that kind of contract.

Adding Bregman would slide Mark Vientos over to first base so the former Houston Astros infielder could play the hot corner.

He may not provide the power numbers that Alonso does, but he plays a more valuable position, he's great defensively, and he's a proven winner. The 30-year-old is one of the top free agents for a reason. He could be on the Mets' radar if they whiff on Alonso.
