A spokesperson confirmed the news of Marianne’s passing at the age of 78 on Thursday 30 January in a statement which read, ‘It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull. Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.’ Born in Hampstead, after the release of the single ‘As Tears Go By’ – written by Mick Jagger - Marianne released her debut album Marianne Faithfull in 1965 to huge critical acclaim. Numerous albums followed, as did a film career with roles in movies like I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname (1967) and Hamlet (1969). After a brief hiatus, Marianne made a comeback with her seventh studio album Broken English and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for her efforts. Marianne Faithfull released her last album She Walks in Beauty (her 22nd studio album overall) in 2021. Marking a change from her previous recordings and perhaps reflecting her decision to become an author in her later years, She Walks in Beauty was a spoken work album in which she recited 19th-century British Romantic poets.
Mick Jagger isn’t the only star to have paid tribute to Marianne Faithfull since news of her passing. His Rolling Stones bandmates Keith Richards also shared his sadness writing, ‘My heartfelt condolences to Marianne’s family. I am so sad and will miss her’ as did Ronnie Wood who said simply, ‘Farewell dear Marianne.’ Julian Lennon – the son of John Lennon - wrote, 'So very sad to hear of Marianne Faithfull’s passing. A uniquely special soul, she was one of a kind - someone who truly did stand out among her contemporaries. Deepest condolences to her family and friends.’ Metallica drummer, Lars Ulrich, also shared a tribute to Marianne. ‘Thank you, Marianne… For the good times, for your kindness, for the great stories, for your fearlessness,’ he said. ‘The biggest thank you and f**k yeah for your incredible and unique contribution to our music, and for always being so willing to join us in performing it… and partake in the ensuing shenanigans.’ Daisy Hall is a News and Entertainment writer on Grazia
