Several Midwestern states could have a white Thanksgiving as meteorologists are forecasting several inches of snow to fall later this week.
An updated forecast from AccuWeather shows the expected weather impacts across the nation as almost 80 million Americans are set to travel for the holiday, AAA reported. AccuWeather forecasts that "significant travel disruptions are anticipated for tens of millions" of travelers.
For the Midwest, most snow will hit Wednesday night, after peak travel occurs on Tuesday and Wednesday.
AccuWeather's forecast anticipates 1 to 3 inches to fall from Springfield, Illinois, east across Indiana, Ohio and the north up through the East Coast on Wednesday night. Higher amounts up to 6 inches are expected in some parts of the Northeast.
AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines told Newsweek that Midwest snow across Illinois, Indiana and Ohio could affect day-of Thanksgiving travelers.
For some states, snow could come earlier, possibly causing further disruptions to holiday travel.
"Wet snow expected. The snow will be mixed with rain at times near Lake Michigan. Total snow accumulations ranging from an inch or two close to Lake Michigan to 3 to 5 inches inland at locations such as Rock, Steuben and Germfask," the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Marquette, Michigan, warned in a winter weather advisory issued on Monday. "Snowfall will be heaviest in the late afternoon and evening."
The advisory is in effect until 1 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
"Plan on slippery road conditions," the advisory said. "The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday evening commute."
A hazardous weather outlook issued for central Illinois, east central Illinois, southeast Illinois and west central Illinois warned that some snow could fall on Wednesday night, which might catch some travelers off guard.
"A mix of rain and snow will move across the region Wednesday into Wednesday night. Although most will see little to no snow accumulation, there is potential for a narrow band of snow to bring at least 1 inch of snow somewhere north of I-70 (10-20% chance)," the outlook said. "If this happens, minor travel impacts could result.
Rain also will fall in the Indianapolis forecast region on Wednesday and transition into snow later in the evening.
"Confidence in a system affecting Indiana around Thanksgiving continues to increase," the NWS office in Indianapolis posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday. "However, some uncertainty remains particularly on where the system tracks and exact surface temperatures. Current expectation is for rain to transition to snow Wednesday night."
A similar forecast was issued by the Des Moines, Iowa, office.
"The main weather theme for Thanksgiving week will be much colder temps. Breezy & cooler today, but well below normal to end the week. Highs mainly in the teens & 20s by the weekend, with lows single digits & teens. Slight chances for lgt rain/snow Wed, lgt snow Sat," the office posted on X.
