Mighty Mouse May Fly to Theaters Thanks to Ryan Reynolds’ Team

Just when you thought every single superhero IP out there had been brought to the big screen, here comes another. This one, though, is known for saving the day.

Mighty Mouse, the popular superhero mouse who has been a household name since the 1940s, is set to get his first big-screen adaptation, according to Variety. Maximum Effort, the production company led by Ryan Reynolds, has been tapped by Paramount Animation (Transformers One, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem) to bring Mighty Mouse to theaters, and it’s enlisted writer Matt Lieberman to pen the script.

Lieberman previously worked with Reynolds and Maximum Effort on Free Guy, the 2021 film about a video game NPC who breaks out to save his world. He also wrote The Christmas Chronicle movies (the ones with Kurt Russell as Santa Claus) as well as the recent Addams Family and Scooby-Doo animated films. All of which, in an odd way, does have a very “Mighty Mouse” alchemy. Animation, family adventure, classic IP, etc. Seems like a smart hire.

Though Mighty Mouse has been around for the better part of 100 years, seen in all manner of media (including one of Andy Kaufman’s most famous gags ever), a big Hollywood movie wasn’t really in the cards until about 20 years ago. Since then though, Paramount has made repeated attempts to find the right people to make the film but has yet to bring it all together. Most recently, the people behind Red and The Meg gave it a shot but, since this is a new team, we assume that didn’t pan out.

You tend to trust that team though, especially based on two of its most recent efforts. Paramount Animation recently released both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Transformers One. Neither set the box office on fire, but both blew away expectations critically. If that team can bring just an ounce of the reverence and respect those films showed for those franchises, which also providing a fresh take for new audiences, Mighty Mouse might actually live up to his theme song and save the day.
