Mom Speaks Out After Son Died in Texas Police Custody

2 months ago 5

The mother of a man who died in Texas policy custody on Monday has spoken out following her son's death.

Rego Ornelas' mother Rachel lost her only living son on Monday after having lost her other son, Roy, in 2017 when he was murdered, the local Texas outlet ABC13 reported, and another son the year after.

She told the outlet, "I'm not supposed to outlive my kids. No parent should. It's a pain that never goes away. I'll never truly be happy until I meet them up in heaven."

The 45-year-old was arrested on Monday morning at around 6.23 a.m. at the Texas City Biosphere recycling center, which a Texas City Police Department update said was, "in reference to a Texas City employee locating a man inside the secured area of the facility that had been closed to the public."

He was then taken to Galveston County Jail for booking but was turned away after requiring "a medical fit for incarceration."

Per the Texas police update, as Ornelas was then being taken back to the patrol unit, he required emergency services and was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch's emergency room by ambulance, where he died.

Newsweek has contacted the Texas City Police Department via email for comment. A member of the department asked Newsweek to file a public record request for more information on the case.

The Texas City Police Department reportedly requested the Texas Rangers and the Galveston County District Attorney's Office to begin an investigation, a standard procedure for inmate custody deaths.

Ornelas' family reportedly told ABC13 that they learned of Rego's death on Monday, but have not been given any further information or been allowed to see his body.

His mother reportedly said to the outlet, "Even when the truth comes out, there's no justice. He's gone."

Rachel also spoke with ABC13 after her other son, Roy, was murdered, and his thought-to-be killer had been allowed to go free after making his $100,000 bond.

22-year-old Joseph Farek was one of two men charged with shooting Rachel's son, along with 22-year-old Allen Taylor.

It was reported by ABC13 that Lake Jackson investigators alleged that the two suspects had then dumped Roy's body along the Brazos River.

She told the outlet in 2017, "I was angry. I am angry. I'm pissed off. That man, Farek, should not be out here enjoying Christmas. He shouldn't be out here looking at the birds, hearing them chirping, hugging his family. Where's Roy at?"
