Monty Don, the beloved Gardeners' World host, has opened up about a harrowing health scare that left him "lying on the floor for hours" due to an unexpected bout of sea sickness.

While filming a Channel 4 programme set to explore the British Isles by boat, Monty discovered his susceptibility to sea sickness, a condition where conflicting signals between the inner ear and eyes lead to nausea, as explained by the NHS.

During an episode of the Travel Diaries podcast, Monty recounted his worst travel ordeal to host Molly Rubenstein, saying: "I get very seasick, I'm really bad at sea. Funnily enough, the smaller the boat, the more I like it, so big boats don't do it for me."

He continued with the tale of his maritime misery: "We were filming, I was doing this travel thing around Britain for Channel 4 and, realising after half an hour that this wasn't going to end well, [I was] trying to bribe the captain to go back to port.

"He said 'well, even if I accepted your offer', which he said was derisory, 'there's such a thing called tides, so I wouldn't be able to go back in, I'd have to wait for the tides to dock'."

Monty then described the gruelling aftermath: "So I spent hours lying on a floor next to a bucket, just desperately, with the crew laughing. So that was pretty low on the list.", reports Gloucestershire Live.

The celebrity also reflected on a visit to India, sharing his experience of feeling ill and commented on the notorious impact travel to the country can have "on one's digestive system". He stated: "There are details I would not wish to share with anybody but they are not good."

Monty has been gracing our screens since 1989 when he first contributed to This Morning by providing gardening segments. He's worked on various gardening programmes for both the BBC and Channel 4.

His most prominent role began in 2003 when he stepped into Alan Titchmarsh's shoes as the beloved host of Gardeners' World.
