Mrs Brown's Boys' Scots star Gary Hollywood breaks silence on show's 'racial slur'

1 week ago 4

Scottish actor Gary Hollywood once played hairdresser Dino Doyle in the award-winning sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys, but these days he's firmly focusing on fatherhood.

Introducing his newest arrival into the world with wife of five years, Cherylanne, Gary has welcomed Carter John Hollywood, who was born on 11 October at 8pm, weighing 7lb 4oz. "He made all our dreams come true," the TV star smiled during out exclusive photoshoot.

Given the fact that Gary was on hit TV show Mrs Brown's Boys for 20 years, our sister title OK! had to ask the 45-year-old actor what his thoughts were on the recent controversy surrounding the series. It was reported that Brendan O'Carroll, the star and creator of Mrs Brown's Boys, had to say sorry after a "clumsy joke" during a script read-through led to a racism probe at the BBC.

The comedian acknowledged that his attempt at humour with the character Agnes didn't land as intended, confessing that it "backfired", magazine reports. Following the incident, while cast were preparing for the sitcom's Christmas special, rehearsals were put on pause when the remark was escalated to BBC higher-ups.

Speaking to the Mirror, Brendan shared his remorse: "At a read-through of the Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas specials, there was a clumsy attempt at a joke, in the character of Agnes, where a racial term was implied."

Speaking on the incident, Gary remained very neutral and said: "Let’s just say I’m staying in my own lane when it comes to that one. I’m too busy enjoying life with Ollie, Carter and Cherylanne. I’ve also got a lovely Scottish fairytale film called Faithful coming out too.

He continued about his time on the show: "It’s firmly in the past. I’m grateful for the good memories and enjoyed it while it lasted, but I’ve moved on. It was 20 years of my life and a huge chapter of it, so I just take the good memories with the not-so-good ones.

Career aside, Gary and Cherylanne are firmly enjoying their baby bubble. He explained: We really are [excited]. It feels like we’re running on adrenaline at the moment, though."

Cherylanne, 35, continued: "I agree! I haven’t felt tired since I got back from hospital, even during the night feeds. Carter has been great with his sleep and we’ve been doing alternate nights so it gives us a little bit of structure. I’ll never forget Ollie meeting him in hospital, though – he wanted to hold his baby brother right away."
