Netflix Games has released Squid Game: Unleashed, an upcoming mobile game, earlier than expected. During a surprise announcement at The Game Awards 2024, Netflix revealed that the game will be free for a limited time following its official release on December 17.

That's right. Starting today, you won't need a Netflix subscription to play the upcoming game. The game takes cues from popular battle royale games like Fortnite, where multiple players compete against each other in the eponymous squid games.

"Squid Game is Netflix's most watched series ever, and we want everyone around the world to be able to take part in its return by making Unleashed available to everyone, which is a first for Netflix Games," said Alain Tascan, president, Games at Netflix.

"Squid Game: Unleashed is all about playing with (or against) your friends in the iconic games from the series like Glass Bridge and Red Light Green Light, so we're inviting everyone into the chaos this holiday season."

The announcement was made live at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where the series' iconic pink guards stormed the stage. Speaking of the guards, Microsoft has also announced new limited-edition Squid Game Xbox controllers and a crossover with Call of Duty is also planned for early 2025.

If you haven't watched the original show, check out how to watch it before its upcoming second season. Squid Game Season 2 premieres on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
