Netflix has decided to proceed with Liam Payne‘s last show without his family’s approval.
In case you aren’t caught up, the late One Direction band member filmed one final show before he tragically passed. Alongside host AJ McLean, the 31-year-old was a guest judge on Building The Band with Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland. The point of the talent show was to find the next big boyband — but after Liam died no one was sure if it would ever air.

Well, Netflix has reportedly made their decision. Despite VP Jeff Gaspin revealing earlier this week that the show wasn’t confirmed to come out yet, it seems the company quickly changed its mind. Per The Mirror, as the streamer unveiled their line-up of content for this year in a big media presentation just days ago, Jeff said they were taking the family’s feelings into consideration before determining what to do about the show. He shared:
“So Liam was part of Building The Band and we have been in touch with his family to discuss what role that will play.”
He added:
“There is nothing to announce yet. But we have been speaking with his family.”
Then, suddenly — boom! As of Thursday, the show is a go, and this has left Liam’s family completely confused and “surprised.” An insider told The US Sun on Friday:
“They spoke with Liam’s family as they didn’t want to progress the project without taking their feelings into consideration. The family got the sense that this was a celebration of Liam, an image of positivity. He was doing what he did best as a true boyband star. But they hadn’t given it a final stamp of approval and as far as they were concerned were still discussing what the show would look like. So they were surprised by the announcement.”
Meanwhile, a second source for Radar Online painted a much different picture. They said the Strip That Down singer’s fam is “furious” with Netflix for their sudden decision:
“Liam’s family are furious with how this has played out. The series is obviously sensitive for them so they wanted to watch it in full and discuss certain elements to it before the series goes to air. But Netflix are just ploughing ahead without his family being given the final seal of approval, which has upset those closest to Liam.”
So sad if true. We can’t imagine how his family feels about being kept in the dark, especially with this being so soon after the singer’s death!
What do U think, Perezcious readers? Should Netflix have been more sensitive about this? Let us know in the comments (below).
