After a 20 year absence from the Scary Movie franchise, the kings of parody films, the Wayans brothers, are back with the sixth instalment of the horror-spoof favourite.

Keenen Ivory, Marlon, and Shawn Wayans – the comedic masterminds behind the original two films – are reuniting to bring the laughs (and screams) back to the big screen.

Fans were sent into a frenzy after Marlon Wayans took to social media to announce the news with a spine-chilling snap of himself standing beside the iconic "Wazzup" Ghostface.

Marlon's post read: "WE’RE BACK!!! After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the SCARY MOVIE franchise! We’re looking forward to having fun on the big screen again."

The original Scary Movie, which hilariously skewered teen slasher classics like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, exploded onto screens in 2000, grossing over $270 million worldwide. It turned Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks (played by Anna Faris and Regina Hall) into household names. Although, it is currently unknown whether they'll return for the sixth instalment.

With production kicking off next year, the Wayans brothers will be writing and producing alongside long-time collaborator Rick Alvarez, promising a return to the kind of chaotic comedy that made Scary Movie a box-office juggernaut in the early 2000s, according to Deadline.

Marlon, Shawn and Keenen told Deadline: "We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again.

"This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again.

"We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theatres, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.’

Miramax Boss Jonathan Glickman added: "We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise.

"The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world."
