New York Giants Make Decision on Future of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen

The New York Giants ended the season with a 3-14 record, and everyone believed they would lead to the firing of either head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. However, that will not be the case.

Giants owner John Mara announced that both Schoen and Daboll will return for the 2025 season.

There had been rumblings that Mara was contemplating and weighing the futures of both Daboll and Schoen separately, and the belief was that at least one would be fired. That is not going to be the case, and the Giants will move on with the same front office in 2025.

It is a bit strange that the Giants have chosen this path considering all that has gone wrong in 2024. Despite the stated 3-14 record, New York has had multiple big issues.

One of those big issues is the complete mismanagement of the Daniel Jones situation. Jones was given a massive contract extension in 2023, despite the fact that he had the markings of not being the right quarterback for the Giants.

Jones tore his ACL in 2023 and made it back in 2024. However, his play was nowhere near what it had been before the injury. Jones was then unceremoniously cut by the Giants, leading to his signing with the Minnesota Vikings.

The other big issue the Giants faced in the offseason was allowing Saquon Barkley to walk in free agency. He would join the Philadelphia Eagles and secure a 2,000 rushing yard season and was 101 from breaking the record set by Rams legend Eric Dickerson.

Schoen is responsible for allowing that to happen. Though the Giants got a monster of a player back in former Panthers edge rusher Brian Burns, losing Barkley impacted the offense greatly.

The good news is the Giants are picking No. 3 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, which means they can finally take another swing at landing a franchise quarterback or player. Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, and Travis Hunter could all be that player.

That said, if Schoen happens to strike out on landing the quarterback this team desperately needs, he might not make it back for another season.

It will be interesting to see how Daboll plans to rebound this team. Though he has proven to be a leader of men, he is not a winner. He has gone 18-32-1 in his three seasons leading the Giants, which should have also been the cause for him being let go.

That will not be the case, and both will get another shot at trying to get the Giants back into playoff contention. A winning record, at this point, would also suffice.
