While Meryl Streep and Martin Short, who play lovers Loretta Durkin and Oliver Putnam on Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, have yet to publicly confirm their rumored real-life relationship, a series insider came close to announcing it in an interview with Decider on Thursday, October 24.
Co-creator John Hoffman spoke to the outlet in the week ahead of the season finale, which is expected to feature Oliver and Loretta's wedding, and mentioned that the Academy Award winning actress, 75, and the Emmy-winning comedian, 74, "delighted each other."
When speaking of their burgeoning relationship, the writer and executive producer called it, "one of the most unexpected turns" that he experienced on the series. "As I got to know Meryl, as I've known Marty and as I watched the two of them work together in Season 3, I just — it was unbelievable. We were laughing our heads off," he said.
The rumors of a Streep/Short romance began circulating after People officially revealed that Streep has been separated from her husband, Don Gummer, for nearly seven years in 2023. Short's wife, actress Nancy Dolman, passed away due to cancer in 2010.
Steve Martin, another Only Murders star and long-time collaborator of Short's, added fuel to the fiery rumors by posting a photo of himself, Streep, and Short, with his own face crossed out on Instagram. Many fans took this as confirmation that Streep and Short share a special connection. "did he just hard launch the relationship?" asked one commenter on the post. "I don't know why the thought of Meryl and Martin makes me so happy but it honestly fills my heart with joy," enthused a fan.
Whether they're actually a couple or just close friends, Short and Streep were seen holding hands at the Only Murders in the Building premiere in August 2024.
