Paul Danan discussed his shopping addiction weeks before his shock death

Paul Danan shared details of a shopping addiction in an interview that has been released following his shock death last month.

The Hollyoaks star was just 46 when he passed away after reportedly falling and hitting his head at a property in Bristol on 15 January. Friends and family bid farewell to the soap icon at a funeral in Waltham Abbey, Essex, towards the end of last month.

Now the actor has been sharing anecdotes from his life from beyond the grave as an interview he recorded weeks ago has been released post posthumously. In the interview, Paul opened up about his struggle to control his spending - recounting how he spent £10,000 on a car that he couldn't afford when he was in rehab as he was granted use of his phone to access a Covid test result.

Those helping the star with his struggles were stunned when he confessed he had splurged money he couldn't afford and swiftly confiscated his phone again. The actor has previously claimed he spent over £1 million on rehab as he battled to overcome drink and drug addictions.

He told the Outlet Ten Discussions Podcast, which posted his final interview on Sunday: "(I remember thinking) I think I need a car. I wonder if NatWest would lend me 10 grand. So, I can't believe I'm saying this, I go on the app, and it f***ing gives me 10 grand, like that.

"Within a day, I had the money, and I just couldn't believe it. I'm shopping around, they're bringing up my food, saying, 'Don't worry Paul, the test will come back soon, we're so sorry you're in your room.' And I was content...

"And then someone came up with my dinner, and I said to them, 'I just need to tell you this - I've just bought a car, but I'm gonna be here, and it's up North, and I don't know how I'm gonna get it. But I've paid for it, And it was 10 grand.' They said, 'We knew you had a shopping addiction, but Paul, 10k you can't do that!' And they took my phone off me."

During the same interview, the TV star revealed that he landed a part in a huge Hollywood film - only to be dropped from the cast before filming began. Paul claimed: "I got this Steve Martin film, called Cheaper by the Dozen - I was going to play the boyfriend of the daughter, they gave me the part, but then the director bumped into Ashton Kutcher.

"He'd just done Just Married with Brittany Murphy and he [director] said, 'Oh, I've got this English guy, but if you want to do it, Ashton, you can?' And he [Ashton] went, 'Yeah, man, I'll do you a favour.' And they phoned me and they said, 'Paul we're really sorry, we know we said that, you know we loved you, but it's Ashton Kutcher, for f**k's sake!'"

Podcast host Anne-Marie asked if he believed everything happens for a reason, and Paul replied: "I mean, I don't know with that one. That was a hard one. I was meant to work with Steve Martin. My mum loved him, I phoned her and said, 'Guess f**ing what? I've done it!' You know? It did get me down and out there there's a lot of drugs, there's a lot of partying, and there's a lot of gym and wellness and fit people and everyone looks amazing, and I just was on my own. I didn't have anyone and I was so lonely and it was hard man."
