Peter Andre says his father-in-law 'saved him'

Peter Andre candidly opened up about his father-in-law - who he shares a one-of-a-kind relationship with.

During an interview on the Pride of Britain red carpet, Peter, who proudly stood alongside his wife Emily and his two children, Junior and Princess, shared details about the special bond he has with his Emily's 'hero' dad Ruaraidh MacDonagh.

When asked who he would nominate for a Pride of Britain award, the Mysterious Girl singer instantly said it would go to Mr MacDonagh. He said his father-in-law, who is a doctor, saved his life when he fell ill, and ultimately, that's how he then fell for Emily, who is also a doctor.

As Peter was about to appear at the Plymouth Pavilions, he was rushed into hospital with excruciating pain and was diagnosed with kidney stone. He was treated by Emily's dad, and became close to consultant urologist Ruaraidh. When he went to finally perform in Plymouth, he was then introduced to his daughter.

Peter and Emily remained good friends, and at the time, due to his high profile divorce from ex Katie Price in 2009, the singer was concentrating on his career and being a father. However he finally plucked up the courage to ask Ruaraidh for permission to take 20-year-old Emily out on a date. Peter was 36 when they first met, and the pair then went public with their relationship in 2012.

Now, standing together on the red carpet, Pete stood alongside his family. The Cypriot singer, 51, was beaming with pride as he arrived at the awards show with his teenage kids in tow. Speaking to The Mirror, the father-of-five gushed: "It's so important for us to come as a family and bring the kids. J and P [Junior and Princess] are adults now and they still want to come with us. Every single year. We love it."

Peter, who looked sleek in a black velvet tuxedo and bow tie, continued: "If we don't go to any other event, it doesn't matter. This is the only event we want to go to because of what it stands for. When you come here and hear the stories, it's just so inspirational. And every year gets bigger and better. You never think you can top it."

Emily, who shares three young children with Peter, turned heads in a plunging off-the-shoulder ballgown, while Princess shone in a black and white strapless dress, and Junior wore a grey suit and smart black turtleneck. Looking at his children, Peter beamed: "It's hard for us [him and Emily] to compete with them. We've bought a bit of sparkle."

It comes after Peter opened up about his plans to renew his wedding vows with wife Emily. The British-Australian singer tied the knot to the NHS doctor, 35, at Mamhead House and Castle, Devon, in July 2015. And as they prepare to mark 10 years of marriage next year, Peter revealed to OK! magazine how they might celebrate the milestone.
