Over the last two years, Drake has proudly shown the world that he purchased Pharrell‘s legendary memorabilia in music videos. He also dissed him on a few records. Finally, the 51-year-old producer has shared his thoughts on the matter.
The Neptunes member was dubbed the “Designer Of The Year” by GQ, and thus gave them an interview. At one point, he was asked about his online auction on Joopiter and if the fact the Toronto superstar bought his iconic jewelry bothered him because of what he may do with it.
“No, because I think beyond all of the on-goings, at the heart of all of it, he’s a fan of music,” the Louis Vuitton men’s creative director said. “He’s a fan of the history of what it is, and I happen to be a part of that, and those artifacts are a part of it.”
The interviewer asked Pharrell if he was “cool” with Drake buying the items, and he simply replied “Yeah.” He gave another short reply when asked if it struck him when Drizzy said he would melt down the jewelry on Travis Scott’s “Meltdown” from July 2023.
“It didn’t,” he replied.
He added more context a few questions later: “I guess some things are not for me to understand. When you let things go, a huge part of it is actually letting go. Not just of the physical item, but letting go of your connection to what it’s supposed to mean, or the memory. You’re literally letting them go. That was the purpose.”
The 6 God first showed off the jewelry in the “Jumbotron Sh*t Poppin'” video in January 2023. Six months later, he dissed Pusha T and Pharrell on “Meltdown.” Kendrick Lamar took the shots personally and stated that he would “inherit the beef” on his April diss track “Euphoria.” Drizzy suggested that if he felt so strongly he could “come get his legacy” out of his house on “Family Matters.”
