Phillies Reportedly Seeking to Acquire All-Star Closer With Hefty Asking Price

The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to add to their bullpen this offseason. It's just a matter of whether the addition occurs by trade or through free agency.

The Athletic's MLB insider Ken Rosenthal is reporting the A's approached the Phillies about a trade for Alec Bohm. When the Phillies responded with interest in Mason Miller, the A's reportedly quickly ended the conversation.

Miller is set to make just $740,000 in 2025 with the Athletics. He has yet to enter his arbitration years, which will see his pay increase exponentially. Between his low price and coming off of a season with a 2.49 ERA and 28 saves, it makes sense why the A's want to hold on to Miller.

However, it leads to the question of what would it take for the Phillies to land Miller?

FanSided's Quinn Everts took a stab at what the cost may be for the Phillies to convince the A's to cough up their closer.

"So if the Mason Miller package becomes Bohm -- who would provide immediate offensive impact -- and a prospect, the A's could bite. ... Aidan Miller and Andrew Painter should be off the table," wrote Everts. "But these Phillies want to win now, and a top-end closer like Mason Miller would help that happen ... so the next group of prospects like Starlyn Caba and Justin Crawford should be players that (Phillies general manager Dave) Dombrowski is willing to float for a Miller deal."

Everts is definitely on the right track given that Crawford and Caba are the Nos. 3 and 4 prospects in the Phillies' farm system. Phillies general manager Dave Dombrowski may even need to add a lower prospect to get the deal over the finish line.

The Phillies are in win-now mode, and they are expected to be aggressive in acquiring Miller or another high-leverage reliever.
