Drivers can prevent frost and ice build-up on car windscreens this autumn and winter by using a simple potato trick.
Slicing a potato and rubbing it over the glass may seem silly at first, but the root vegetable could be vital in protecting vehicles as temperatures fall, according to MotorMatch.
The simple trick creates a thin layer of starch over the glass which prevents moisture from building up on the surface.
It should lead to less frost which means motorists won’t have to spend ages de-icing a vehicle before heading to work.
However, motorists must follow the rule the night before a major freeze meaning some forward planning is needed.

MotorMatch explained: “It might sound unusual, but rubbing the cut side of a potato onto your windscreen can make a big difference. The starch forms a protective film that stops moisture from sticking to the surface, so frost won’t settle as easily overnight, and condensation will be less likely to form during rainy or humid weather.”
They added: “The starch creates a hydrophobic effect, meaning water droplets won’t cling to the glass.
“This can improve visibility during heavy rainfall, as the water runs off the windscreen in a smooth sheet rather than scattering into distracting droplets.”
A bag of potatoes will cost individuals just over £1 making it a cost-effective solution for cash-strapped road users.
Experts are quick to note that the hack offers a natural alternative to chemical treatments.
It could also save drivers from having to purchase new de-frosting spray and de-ice picks ahead of temperatures falling.
However, MotorMatch has warned potatoes are not just the only vegetable which contains the vital starch needed to make the trick work.
