A golden retriever's owner was expecting all sorts of destructive behaviors when she left her puppy home alone, as is typical of all dogs, but she surely wasn't expecting what she saw on the camera when she checked on him.
Footage recorded on her ring camera, then shared to TikTok on Tuesday under the username @beauthatgolden, shows the pup, Beau, quietly sitting on a chair, looking outside the window, as if counting every second his owner was gone.
"Was worried that he'd chew everything when I left him home alone but then I checked the ring camera..." reads layover text in the clip.
The poster, Erica Summers, told Newsweek that she only left her 4-month-old pup home alone to run a quick 10 minute errand, but she did not expect he would be so well-behaved.
"When I checked the Ring cam he was waiting patiently, looking out the window to see when I was coming home. So of course I dropped everything I was doing and rushed home immediately to give him cuddles and treats!" she said.
While Beau acted like a very good boy in absence of his owner, many dog owners are not as lucky, and often come back to completely destroyed pillows, couches or furniture after leaving them alone, even for a very short time.
Bondi Vet explains that dogs become destructive alone for many reasons, including being bored, hungry or stressed, or because they are experiencing separation anxiety.
Setting a balanced morning routine, and giving them something to chew on, as well as enrichment and food toys, should help tame this behavior in most cases. However, this doesn't always work when separation anxiety is involved.
If your pup still struggles with being alone despite the different sources of enrichment available, a behavior modification program with a specialized animal behaviorist can help them overcome their issues. Medication may be needed in some cases.
The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 9.2 million views and 2.2 million likes on the platform.
One user, Chewy, commented: "Did you immediately rush home after seeing this?!"
HaleyAnn said: "That's it, you have to quit your job and be with him 24/7."
Haoleberry added: "You're very lucky. Can't leave mine alone for 5 minutes."
