Queen Mary of Denmark announces new podcast Lonely Youth

Queen Mary of Denmark has released her first podcast.

The Australian-born royal, who married King Frederik in 2004, took to the Danish royal family’s Instagram to announce the news, revealing that her debut episode would reflect on the theme of loneliness.

“I’m extremely excited to be listening to podcast(s). I often listen when I have to move from one place to another,” she said in the post on Monday (AEDT).

“Some days I’m in the mood for entertainment and other days I use it to gain knowledge and new input.

“That’s why I’m also proud that we’ve now thrown ourselves into making podcasts in Mary Fonden.”

Mary Fonden — or The Mary Foundation in English — is the Queen’s nonprofit organisation and works to address bullying, domestic violence and loneliness.

The announcement continued: “Our first podcast is called ‘Lonely Youth’, and through three short episodes, it gives an in-depth insight into the nuances of loneliness by mixing professionalism and personal narratives from young people.

“We know from the study Loneliness in Denmark that 73 per cent of 16 to 19-year-olds experience loneliness, regardless of whether they are alone or with others.

“At the same time, 17 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds feel very lonely.

“These are heavy numbers that we must do something about.

“Podcasts are not something we have this much experience with yet in Mary Fonden, but I hope you will listen and feel welcome.”

The announcement post also included a photo of Mary seated on a couch wearing earphones as she appeared to speak to someone over FaceTime.

Mary has always had a passion for initiatives to protect young people and was International Patron of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation from 2005 until June 2024.

The foundation was created in the name of two of the youngest victims of the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur, in Tasmania, in which 35 people were killed.

Set up by the girls’ father Walter Mikac, who also lost his wife Nanette, the foundation is dedicated to keeping children and young people free from violence and trauma.

In 2022, the Danish royal family donated $50,000 to the foundation.

Mary is not the first royal to enter the podcasting world.

Most famously, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex signed an eyewatering deal with Spotify in 2020 reportedly worth $A29 million.

Her series Archetypes aimed to “investigate, dissect and subvert the labels that try to hold women back,” according to its description and featured Meghan’s interviews with celebrities such as Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton and Trevor Noah.

However the deal was cancelled last year with Spotify announcing it and the Sussexes had “mutually agreed to part ways and are proud of the series we made together”.

Queen Camilla also has a podcast titled The Queen’s Reading Room which is an offshoot of Queen Camilla’s charity-slash-bookclub where she recommends books.

Princess Eugenie also co-hosts the podcast Floodlight with Julia de Boinville, the co-founder of The Anti-Slavery Collective.
