Red Sox Reportedly Out Of Sweepstakes For $200 Million Star Infielder

The Alex Bregman sweepstakes have drawn on for a lot longer than anybody anticipated this offseason. Very early into the winter, a report came out indicating the Houston Astros had an offer on the table worth over $150 million, but it was believed Bregman was looking for close to $200 million.

After weeks of negotiations, the sweepstakes seems to be coming down to a few teams.

After seemingly dropping out of the race, the Astros are back in it and considered the favorites by many. The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers are two other teams that could steal Bregman from Houston.

The Chicago Cubs are a very interesting National League team in the race. Money could become an issue for the Cubs, but the fit makes a lot of sense.

BostonStrong recently cited ESPN's Jeff Passan's report, which indicated that one of the big market American League teams is no longer likely to land Bregman.

"I don't think Boston is particularly likely to happen at this point," Passan said.

With the recent resurgence of the Astros in this race, it seems like the Red Sox will head in a different direction.

Boston still remains a candidate for swinging a blockbuster trade for Nolan Arenado. Arenado would fit the same role that Bregman would if Boston landed him.

The Red Sox could also elect to avoid adding a third baseman altogether. Instead, Boston could roll with Rafael Devers at third base and Triston Casas at first base, which isn't a lousy duo in the slightest.
