Stains can easily happen on clothes (Image: Getty)
Getting a stain on clothes can easily happen with the likes of coffee, food or pets leaving marks. However, some stains are harder to remove than others.
Especially when it comes to getting stains out of white clothes but one person has taken to Reddit to share their dilemma.
In a post titled: "I’m doing laundry wrong. What am I doing?"
The thread started: "All of my whites are getting ruined. Now, I don’t typically separate my whites from colours and that could be my problem, but I’ve consulted lots of people in my life who also don’t separate… and don’t have this problem.
"Just feels like a waste of water & detergent to me. Currently, I use an eco-friendly Costco brand of detergent and that’s it. Occasionally a downy fabric softener.

"When I wash my clothes… stains hardly ever come out. I don’t have a single white thing in my closet that isn’t ruined, and if it doesn’t have these marks on it then it’s just not really that white anymore. I have a brand new washer btw.
"I don’t know how or when it is appropriate to use bleach in a wash. How do I make my whites white? And even if I only wore ONE white shirt in the entire load… do I have to waste water and detergent to put it by itself?"
The user explained that she has used different washers and detergents and has "always had this problem".

Reddit users suggested skipping fabric softener (Image: Getty)
Along with the post the user shared a picture of the clothing mentioned with a big stain on a jumper.
People took to the thread to share their tips on how to get rid of the stain with users commenting the same thing.
One person wrote: "This looks like fabric softener got poured right on top of the shirt.
"Not separating darks and whites is fine if you don’t have any new clothes. There is a dye in new clothes that comes out in the first few washes. New red sweatshirt + white tee shirts = pink tee shirts."
Another said: "Skip fabric softener entirely. Put the detergent in the washer before you put your clothes in. Pretreat stains with Spray n Wash. For whites, use bleach."
A user replied: "It's a stain from either too much detergent sitting on the clothes or fabric softener. Don't use softener ever, at all."
Some users suggested using vinegar instead, with one person commenting: "Looks like a fabric softener stain. Don't use it. If you're wanting to soften your clothes use vinegar."
Another said: "Stop using laundry softener. Use regular white distilled vinegar instead. If you want the scent, use downy beads. They leave the scent, but wash out of clothes."
A third added: "I got rid of these marks by using vinegar and dish soap during my wash cycle. If I use too much detergent I get those marks."
