RTE's Sarah McInerney's life with husband Thomas, two sons, leaving media role and life at home

Sarah McInerney has become one of the biggest names in RTÉ since landing a full-time role with the national broadcaster in September 2020.

After working with TV3 and Newstalk she became the co-host of Radio 1's Drivetime show, alongside Cormac O'hEadhra, before taking over from David McCullagh to team up with Miriam O'Callaghan on Prime Time.

Away from her busy career on TV and radio, Sarah is married to husband Thomas and they share two sons together, Ben and Caelan, and live in the suburb of Sutton in north Dublin.

Family life

Sarah and her husband Thomas live in the suburb of Sutton in north Dublin.

The couple share two sons together; Ben and Caelan. Previously, the RTÉ star admitted that lockdown brought them closer together as a couple.

"I think it has brought myself and Thomas closer even than we were before because we really only had each other to rely on and work as a team to help each other," she told the RTÉ Guide.

"If one of us wasn't pulling our weight at home, there wither would drown because there is so much to do and there is no let up. It has been really intense but in a really nice way."

Sarah said that her husband Thomas is her favourite travelling companion.

She previously told RSVP Magazine: "We used to plan big trips every year, before our son was born. Now, we just sneak away for a night whenever we can.

"We both love diving and skiing and we are hoping to get away for a few days to Morzine in the French Alps this year."

Earlier this year, Sarah said her wedding day and the birth of her two children were among the happiest days of her life to date.

Speaking of her happiest day in life, Sarah told The Irish Times: "Can’t choose one. My wedding day; when my children were born; when tests ruled out a serious illness for one of my children. But increasingly, I aim for contentment over happiness."

Media Career

Sarah's career in journalism began in print media. She worked as a columnist and reporter with the Sunday Tribune before moving to The Sunday Times. The Galway native then moved into broadcasting, landing the role of co-presenter of Newstalks's drivetime show alongside Chris Donohue in 2016.

Ivan Yates later took over the high profile show and Sarah moved to an hour long weekend slot with the station. She left Newstalk in December 2017. A statement said: "On behalf of the team here in Newstalk I would like to thank Sarah for her hard work and commitment to the station and wish her every success in the future."

She also worked in news and current affairs on TV3, filling in for Vincent Browne and Ivan Yates on their shows before she fronted her own weekly programme called The Sunday Show.

Sarah enjoys her dual roles on TV and radio.

She told RSVP Live: "I love radio, it is very different from TV.

"It is very conversational and I think there is a real connection between you and your listeners that you don't necessarily get on TV. Having said that, I have done TV work and I do love TV as well."

RTÉ

After first hosting The Late Debate in 2018, Sarah joined RTÉ on a full-time basis in September 2020, linking up with Cormac O'hEadhra to take over from Mary Wilson on Drivetime. Her new job came after a very successful stint filling in on Radio 1's mid-morning slot following Seán O'Rourke's retirement.

In March 2021, and after much speculation, it was revealed that Sarah would be the new presenter of Prime Time, joining Miriam O'Callaghan every Tuesday while Fran McNulty would co-anchor on Thursdays.

Sarah has regularly been praised on social media for her hard hitting and unrelenting interviews, especially with politicians. She won the 2022 IMRO Award for the Best Moment in Radio for her interview with the Russian Ambassador to Ireland.

She and her husband Thomas had to create a new way of working after she landed her roles in Montrose.

"This is a new way of working, so it is really handy to have someone else who is in the same situations and who understands what it is like to have small kids in the house, especially if there is Covid. We have been able to help each other out," Sarah told TV Now.

Where she is from and age

Sarah hails from Bearna in County Galway.

She celebrated her 40th birthday in muted style during lockdown.

Life away from media

Sarah uses the gym as a way of winding down and escaping the busyness of life. She regularly shares updates of her work outs on her Instagram account.

"The gym is like my church, honestly, I go five days a week. When I am in the gym I am generally working so hard concentrating on what I am doing and listening to really loud music, so it just shuts everything else out," she told Irish Country Magazine.

"The added benefit of it is that it helps your body and keep you fit, but it is mostly for my head. It is one of the only places that I really switch off."
