Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, the second installment of Kevin Costner’s ambitious western film series, will have its U.S. premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The film, which had its world premiere last summer at the Venice Film Festival, comes on the heels of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, which, in turn, had its world premiere last spring at the Cannes Film Festival. (On the Croisette, Costner discussed Horizon extensively during a live recording of THR’s Awards Chatter podcast.)
On Feb. 7, SBIFF will screen the first film at 2 p.m., right before the second at 6 p.m., at the Arlington Theatre. At the conclusion of the second, Costner — a Santa Barbara local who co-wrote, directed, produced and stars in the film — will participate in a Q&A moderated by SBIFF executive director Roger Durling.
The fest will also screen Beyond the Horizon, a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of the film, on Feb. 13 at 8:20 p.m. It will be followed by a Q&A with Costner and Beyond the Horizon director Mark Gillard, moderated by SBIFF programming director Claudia Puig.
Reportedly, the combined budget for the two Horizon films was $100 million, $38 million of which was fronted by Costner himself. The first grossed a disappointing $38 million worldwide, which threw the release plans for the second installment — and Costner’s hopes for making third and fourth installments — into question.
