A soap icon has been axed from their show after 37 years and insisted they 'couldn't do anything about it'.
Neighbours legend Lucinda Cowden revealed she will no longer be playing her Melanie Pearson role. She filmed her final scenes on the Amazon Prime Video-revived show earlier this summer. Her character, Melanie, is currently in a love triangle with Annie Jones' Jane Harris and Craig Hall's character Vic Stone.
However, that will soon come to an end as she will be leaving her role next month. In a new chat with Ben Bone and Ben Fenlon, who host the NeighBens YouTube show, Lucinda opened up about her shock departure from the beloved series. When questioned about how she is, she said: "How am I? I’m unemployed! I’m off, it’s true. I’m sorry.
"I can’t do anything about it, it wasn’t my decision. Mel’s off in her truck and doesn’t have any plans to return, immediately." In spoilers for the show, Melanie will be 'closing a chapter' on her life as the residents get together to throw her a leaving party at the 82 tram Café before she droves off in a van.
When asked by the host of the YouTube channel what has been going on in the show, Lucinda added that it was a "year of a lot of goodbyes." She went on to admit that she found out the news of her departure in December, 2023. Fans were heartbroken by the news and took to the comment section to share their thoughts about the producers' decisions.
"So I rand Ryan [Maloney] to say, 'Sorry babe, I'm off' and got the shock of my life when he said, 'Me too!' You know, you could've blown me over with a feather. It kind of made made a little bit of sense for me rather than if it was just me," she added.
"Aww, sad that Lucinda is leaving," one user said while another posted: "Ffs!!! Start the petition, boys! Bring back our Mel." Another heartbroken viewer commented: "Oh no! Gutted. Mel has been one of my faves for years and years and definitely a fave of the reboot. Rubbish. What a wonderful interview though! Love to Lucinda."
