Solange has been absent from music for a few years now, and fans recently learned why, as the 38-year-old artist opened up about the health issues she has been coping with privately.
Interestingly enough, this wasn’t a self-driven admission; rather, she expressed her support for musician Shaun Ross who announced he had been dealing with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). It is an autoimmune disorder that he contracted after battling COVID. The When I Get Home artist jumped in his comments and revealed that she had the same health battle, plus two others.
“Sending you so much love and strength Shaun and to everyone in the comments dealing with the overwhelming, confusing, and isolating nature of POTS!” she wrote before stating she also had cases of POTS, Sjogren’s syndrome and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) in 2018. “I completely understand what it’s like to not want your health circumstances to define you. The good folks at @dysautonomiaintl were really an incredible resource for me and I feel really grateful for the spoonie community for holding me down during my times of complete uncertainty!”
Shaun Ross screenshot her comment and posted it on X, writing “Proof that you just never know when someone may be struggling behind closed doors. Thank you @solangeknowles for commenting on this #POTS #dysautonomia.” In a separate tweet, he pondered if being an artist had anything to do with their declines in health.
“It’s so interesting to look back at Solange in 2017 when she revealed she had pots and to see the slow down and change of career pace,” he said. “I wonder if this came from the rush of tour and everything else. I know that the first time I performed on my 2nd tour was when it truly hit me hard like a switch.”
Solange hasn’t released music in a few years, but she has not stopped working. Earlier this year, she told Harper’s Bazaar that she had taken up a new instrument. “I’ve started writing music for the tuba,” she said. “And I am trying to talk myself into releasing it, but I can only imagine the eye rolls from people being like, ‘This bi**h hasn’t made an album.'”
In 2022, she debuted as a ballet composer for the New York City Ballet Fashion Fall Gala, becoming the first Black woman to do so. Her sister, Beyoncé, gave her sibling flowers for the new venture via Instagram. “My beloved sister, there are no words to express the pride and admiration I have for you,” Bey wrote. “You are a visionary and one of one. Congratulations on being the first African American woman to compose for the New York City Ballet. The piece you composed is phenomenal. I love you deep. Might I suggest you don’t f**k with my sis.”
