Angus MacInnes, the actor best known for playing Jon 'Dutch' Vander in the first Star Wars film, has died at the age of 77, with tributes having been paid to him since news of his passing emerged earlier today

The Star Wars universe is mourning the loss of one of its beloved stars, Angus MacInnes. The 77-years-old, was famed for his role as Gold Leader Jon 'Dutch' Vander in the original 1977 Star Wars – A New Hope.
As the fearless Y-wing pilot who gave his all in the climactic assault on the Death Star, MacInnes's Dutch didn't survive the epic space battle in the franchise.
His family shared the sad news of his death this Monday (December 30), with a heartfelt announcement: "To all Angus' fans around the world, with breaking hearts we write this: Angus MacInnes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and actor died on 23rd of December 2024. He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family and love."
They continued to honour his vast career in their tribute, detailing MacInnes's remarkable filmography that spanned over several decades including unforgettable performances in Star Wars: A New Hope, Witness, Judge Dredd, and Captain Phillips among many iconic appearances.
His family added: "Angus' career spanned decades, with unforgettable roles in films such as Star Wars: A New Hope (as Gold Leader, Jon "Dutch" Vander), Witness, Judge Dredd, Captain Phillips, and many others. His work touched countless lives, and he took great pride in being part of these stories that continue to resonate with audiences worldwide."
His family also reflected on how much the Star Wars community meant to him: "For Angus, the fans of Star Wars held a special place in his heart. He loved meeting you at conventions, hearing your stories, and sharing in your passion for the saga. He was continually humbled, delighted, and honoured by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community."
"Angus was more than an actor-he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humour into the lives of everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and fellow actors but also by his fans around the world - his family thank you all.", reports the Mirror.

Another commented: "So sad to hear this news. I had the pleasure of meeting Angus twice in recent years and he was a very friendly man who enjoyed chatting with the fans, I'm sure he'll be missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. Angus, known for being Gold Leader in Star Wars, also had roles in significant films like Witness (1985), Hellboy (2004) and Captain Phillips (2013), and appeared in several TV shows including Vikings throughout his career.
