Stars Dress To The Nines For The Academy Museum Of Motion Pictures 2024 Gala

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures held its fourth annual gala on Saturday (Oct. 19).

Co-chaired by Tyler Perry, Eva Longoria, Nicole Kidman, Salma Hayek Pinault, Dr. Eric Esrailian, and Jean Hersholt, they helped to raise over $11 million to support the museum’s current and future exhibits, public programmings including screenings and other initiatives to serve the general public and Los Angeles residents. Per an official statement, the gala now “reflects the museum’s mission to advance the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema and to expand knowledge and conversation about cinema as a global art form and cultural force.”

Longoria kicked off the evening’s programming before Steven Spielberg presented the Icon Award to Oscar-winning actress-singer- dancer Rita Moreno. Quentin Tarantino and Paul Mescal were also honored. The latter received the Vantage Award while Tarantino was recognized with the Luminary Award.

During his acceptance speech, the Django Unchained director announced that he’d be donating his first handwritten draft of 1994’s Pulp Fiction to the museum. Before the party began, Ariana Grande introduced her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo, who blessed guests with a performances of “I’m Here” from The Color Purple, Diana Ross’ “Home” from The Wiz, “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, and Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

The Vantage Award honored “an emerging artist or scholar who is helping to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema.” The Icon Award, presented by Rolex, “celebrates an artist whose career has had a significant global cultural impact.” The Luminary Award is “given to an artist whose singular contributions have expanded the creative possibilities of cinema.”

Attendees included some of Hollywood’s most notable figures, like Robert Townsend, H.E.R., Kerry Washington, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Quinta Brunson, Sterling K. Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, Taraji P. Henson, André Holland, RZA, John David Washington and more.
