Taylor Swift's red tights spark new spring accessory trend

On 26th January, Taylor Swift appeared at her beau Travis Kelce's football game and watched his team secure their spot for the Super Bowl. One thing we had our eye on was her bold tights choice. The singer opted for a Louis Vuitton jacket, teamed with a matching beanie, black pleated skirt, and the star of the show: bright red tights.

This French-girl-inspired, or rather Blair Waldorf-inspired, accessory choice is right on trend this year, and we can't get enough. This trend is pretty divisive, with many people being passionately against coloured tights. However, we think it's a great opportunity to have some fun with your wardrobe and make a boring outfit that bit more interesting. Our favourites come from Calzedonia, £9.99.

The trend kicked off on the runways of major designer brands, including Versace, Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana, and has slowly filtered down to the high street.

Red tights were especially trending last year, and this year, while we're still seeing red tights around, the trend has branched out even further. From navy blue to vibrant green and hot pink, coloured tights are the *it* girl accessory to get your hands on.

Taylor is not the only celeb to adopt this trend, with Kylie Jenner, Jenna Ortega, and Gigi Hadid joining in over the past year. And, of course, we can't forget our favourite fictional character, Blair Waldorf, who has been sporting red tights since the 2000s.

If you want to try this accessory out for yourself, we've rounded up the very best coloured tights on the high street.

Red tights are our personal favourite colour to go for. We think red can elevate a look without making it look too clown-like or costume-y. If you're scared to go for a vibrant red, why not try a deep burgundy shade instead? This colour is far more wearable and is completely on-trend.

Try out a head-to-toe monochromatic outfit to channel your inner celebrity.

Other options:

  • My Accessories Plain Tights in Red, currently £9

  • M&S 3pk 60 Denier Body Sensor™ Tights in Dark Claret, £8
  • Boohoo Red Sheer Tights, £8

The great thing about tights is you can completely control the colour and look depending on what opacity you opt for. If you don't want such an intense look, it's best to go for tights that have a lower denier. We think blue tights are a great way to play around with your spring looks. Go for powder blue shades as we head into the new season or try out navy blue if you want a pair of tights a bit closer to your normal black ones.

Other options:

  • M&S 3pk 60 Denier Body Sensor™ Tights in Dark Claret, £8
  • Calzedonia 50 Denier Total Comfort Soft Touch Tights in light blue, currently £4.99 here
  • Lovall Tights in infinity blue marl, £8 here

FALKE Pure Matt 50 DEN Women Tight, £27 here

Deep green tights are far more wearable than other shades (

These forest green tights from Falke are probably the most wearable shade of our selection. Green is always on trend and we think once you start wearing coloured tights, you won't be able to go back. FALKE's tights are on the pricier side, but the quality is well worth it if you want to avoid ladders and ripping.

Other options:

  • Amazon 80 Den Soft Opaque Tight in soft green, £6.99 here
  • ASOS thin ribbed tights in dark green, £10 here
