What do Conan O'Brien and Hollywood legends like Douglas Fairbanks, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Carson, and Whoopi Goldberg have in common? Not much-yet. But on March 2, the celebrated comedian will join their ranks as the host of the 97th Academy Awards.
O'Brien's illustrious career spans decades. From his early days as a writer for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons to his tenure as a beloved late-night talk show host, the Brookline, Massachusetts native has built a reputation as one of television's most iconic figures.
His accolades speak for themselves: O'Brien has been nominated for an Emmy 31 times, winning five, and has earned widespread recognition for his sharp wit and unique humor. Now, he'll bring his comedic prowess to the Oscars' global stage.
"America demanded It"
Early Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced O'Brien as the host of the 2025 Oscars. True to his comedic style, O'Brien confirmed the news on social media with a cheeky post: "America demanded it, and now it's happening: Taco Bell's new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I'm hosting the Oscars."
In a joint statement, Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy, and Janet Yang, its president, expressed their excitement about the choice: "We are thrilled and honored to have the incomparable Conan O'Brien host the Oscars this year. He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humor, his love of movies and his live TV expertise."
They added, "His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best - honor the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year."
Not Conan's first rodeo
O'Brien is no stranger to hosting major events. He previously helmed the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2002 and 2006, the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, and TNT's Christmas in Washington specials in 2011 and 2012.
With his experience, charisma, and quick wit, O'Brien is poised to follow in the footsteps of Jimmy Kimmel and other legendary hosts, ensuring that this year's Oscars will be one to remember.
