'The Way Home' Season 3, Ep. 5 Recap: Elliot's Ex-Wife Returns & Del Comes to a Head With Alice

2 hours ago 2

In the fifth episode of The Way Home‘s season 3, Kat (Chyler Leigh) and Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) go straight to talking about the biggest mysteries they’re trying to solve. Just like you do every Friday night with your friends, we’re guessing!

In the first scene of the episode, Alice sees her mom come into Coyle’s as she listening to one of teen Colton’s (Jordan Doww) shows. They first started off talking about Kat’s former intern Casey Goodwin (Vaughan Murrae), who Alice is certain is a time traveler from the future.

“Turns out my intern’s references are just as fake as their last name,” Kat says. “Yeah because they’re from the future!” Alice quips back. “Alice, Casey might not be a Goodwin but there’s still no definite proof that they’re a time-traveler,” Kat says.

As for the mystery surrounding Colton’s time traveling, Kat’s the most certain one. “Colton may have been raised on stories of a magical pond but he’s given zero hints that he’s ever time-traveled himself,” Alice denies. “Colton knew me in ’99, Mom. And if he were a time traveler he would’ve realized that I was his friend from ’74. But he didn’t. If you need definite proof, then that’s it, right?”

As the mother-daughter duo continues to go nowhere with their bickering, they both go back to hearing Colton’s singing. In one song, which is from Jasper’s book of songs in Port Haven history, Colton hits a sore spot for Kat. In it, the love song sings about saying goodbye to a loved one “divided by water and time.” Sounds familiar?

After the show, Alice heads to Evelyn’s (Devin Cecchetto) new room in the attic at Lingermore. According to her, the room used to belong to an ancestor of hers who was locked in the attic by her husband.

Then, she has an idea: she’ll use an Ouija board to speak to the woman, who she calls Cassandra (a Goodwin family name). After Cole and Delilah (Julia Tomasone) join in, Evelyn starts speaking to Cassandra’s spirit. “Fire too fast,” the spirit spells out, followed by “blame.”

Before they get to understand what that means, however, the spirit spins the pointer away from the board as the wind gushes in.

Back in 2025, Kat and Elliot (Evan Williams) are once again enjoying their honeymoon phase when they get an unexpected knock at the door. As it turns out, it’s Elliot’s ex-wife, Emma.

“I really am sorry to just show up unannounced but my tour stop in St. John got suddenly extended,” she says, adding that she’s checking in after his dad Vic’s texts. Taken aback by her visit, Elliot invites her to lunch. Looks like everyone’s a bit flustered by the visit!

Going back to Evelyn’s room, she explains to Alice what happened in the pond when she and Colton were kids. “When we were eight, I nearly drowned and Cole dove in to save me,” she remembers. “My parents separated us but we still found a way to talk to each other.”

She then spots an opening under the window that burst open when Cassandra was coming through. They open it and find the painting Susanna made of Kat. “I recognize her face,” Evelyn says looking at the artwork. “I think her face seems pretty generic,” Alice responds, trying not to reveal the truth.

Back to the Emma storyline, she and Elliot reminisce at his dining room table. “We became friends, and we decided to date, which went on for ages,” Emma said. “I kept wondering if he’d ever be brave enough to pop the question. He’d set up these big romantic dates and then always chicken out.”

“Elliot and his perfect moment,” Kat chimed in. “I know it very well.”

In another present-day scene, Alice is catching up with her dad Brady (Al Mukadam) when her love interest Noah (Alexander Eling) walks in. When Alice then introduces him to Brady, Noah asks Alice to be his girlfriend. “I mean, only if you want,” he says. How adorable is that?

A few hours later, at Del’s (Andie MacDowell) surprise birthday party, Emma asks Alice to join her in a song for Del. Instead of a song everyone knows, however, they choose a song from Jasper’s music history book.

In the lyrics, Alice sings about a witch being in danger. “Witches were hung for stealing the sun and hung by the light of the moon,” it reads. “When the hanging rope tightened, the witch did not look frightened, for the night went as dark as our tomb.”

After their performance, Kat and Jacob (Spencer MacPherson) try to piece it all together. From their research, the song was written in 1816, the same year that a volcano erupted and clouded the skies for a year without sunlight. With no one else to blame, Port Haven cracked down on the so-called witches.

“I think we have to go back, Kat,” Jacob says. “I think you both are overreacting,” Elliot says. “Or Susanna is in danger,” Kat adds.

While that’s happening, Alice and Del talk on the porch. Alice then reveals that Evelyn was in love with Colton when they met. “It broke her heart when he chose you,” Alice says. “You really didn’t see that?”

Quickly, tensions start to rise. “No, that summer was about me and Colton,” Del says. “What do you want me to feel Alice, guilty? And what, do you think I only thought about myself that summer? Well maybe I did, and maybe I got the happily ever after for as long as I could. But isn’t that allowed?”

“Don’t try to make me feel guilty about what Colton and I had,” she says before storming off. “Stay out of my memories.”

While Alice is consoled by Noah in the clubhouse, Del talks to Sam (Rob Stewart) about a revelation Alice doesn’t know about yet. “I left Port Haven on my birthday after the most perfect summer in 1974,” she says. “I said goodbye to this town and Colton and I went back home, but everything had changed. It was brutal and so lonely. So I made a selfish choice, a choice that left other people with no choice at all.”

“I’m worried she’ll think less of me,” Del admits.

Over at Elliot’s house, he comes clean to Kat about why it took him so long to propose to Emma when they were together. “I saw you,” he says. “That night. You and Brady were in the same restaurant, tables away from me and I don’t know what you were doing in Toronto but it felt like a sign that I had to move on. You were happy, and I had to try to be happy too.”

Looking back at the moment, Kat revealed the moment was the opposite of what it seemed. “El, what you saw was the furthest thing from happy,” Kat says. “Our marriage was just broken so Brady and I thought that maybe a weekend away from Alice would help, maybe it would like rekindle something, but it was already gone. That trip, you saw the beginning of our end.”

“If I had seen you there, I would have run into your arms and I would never have let go,” she adds.

The next day, Alice went back to school and ran into her pseudo nemesis, Max Goodwin (Dale Whibley). When she asks once again if he knows Casey, some hints start coming together.

“No, I don’t,” he says. “Although Casey is a family name, Cassandra actually, so whoever your Casey is they did their Goodwin research.” Alice then flashes back to his comment to Noah that she’s “wife material,” Casey having Max’s eyes and Alice thinking Casey’s from the future. Does this mean Casey’s actually Alice’s child? Does Alice end up with Max? What about Noah?

Lastly, to end the episode on another cliffhanger, Kat and Jacob jump back to 1816 to save Susanna. When they find her, however, instead of being in danger, Susanna’s getting married to Cyrus Goodwin (Tim Post). Talk about unexpected!
