She’s already a global sensation on the small screen but now Bluey and her pals are set for the big-screen treatment. The famous puppy and her family will be the stars in their debut film, which will be released in cinemas in 2027, before streaming on Disney+.

The show’s creator Joe Brumm will write and direct the movie adaptation, which comes after the The Sign special episode in the third series. ‘I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together,’ he said. ‘I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that.’

Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack will reprise their voices as Bluey’s mum and dad Chilli and Bandit Heeler, with vocal talent for Bluey and Bingo yet to be announced. In the animated series, Bluey is voiced by a young actor whose identity is kept private to protect their anonymity, while a crew member’s daughter is the voice of Bingo. But with Hollywood stars such as Natalie Portman and Rose Byrne making cameos in the show, fans are hoping that there will be some star-studded voices in the movie.

The CG-animated movie from Disney and BBC Studios will ‘continue the adventures of Bluey, a loveable, inexhaustible, blue heeler dog, who lives with her mum, dad and her little sister Bingo.’

Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden and Alan Bergman said, ‘Since its debut on Disney Jr. and Disney+, Bluey has become a global phenomenon, uniting families everywhere with its heartfelt stories of play, imagination and connection. We are so proud to expand upon our relationship with BBC Studios to bring the magic of Bluey to the big screen – for real life! – and we are deeply grateful to Joe Brumm for creating a world that continues to inspire and delight families everywhere.’

Since its debut in 2017, Bluey has been a huge success. Available in more than 140 countries, it is 2024’s most-watched series worldwide on Disney+ and is the top show on CBeebies and Disney+ in the UK. The show has won a BAFTA in 2022 and the 2024 AACTA award for Best Children's Programme.

News of the film comes as Joe announced he will be taking a break from the TV series, as he focuses on the movie. ‘I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last. This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series,’ he said.

Excited parents are already buzzing for the movie. Grazia’s Rebecca Holman said, ‘I'm so excited about the Bluey film announcement – any new episodes dropping are big news in our house, and the 30-minute special that was released earlier this year had everyone (adults included) totally hooked, with 75% of our four-person household in floods of tears by the end. I am faintly dismayed to discover it's not coming out till 2027, by which point by children will be *checks notes* eight and five and probably too old to care - but my husband and I can still watch it, right?’

Other parents couldn’t hide their excitement, posting on Bluey’s Instagram. ‘Could you not have told us in 2026? We can’t wait this long! Also does this mean no more seasons til then? Panic stations over here,’ one fan wrote on Instagram. Another said, ‘This is what dreams are made of,’ while a third remarked, ‘Best Christmas surprise ever of my whole life.’
