Tish Cyrus never wanted her marriage to Billy Ray Cyrus to end the way it did. Even long past when she knew it was the healthy move.
While on Monday’s episode of Kate and Oliver Hudson‘s Sibling Revelry podcast, the mom of Miley and Noah Cyrus got real about her divorce from the country singer. Fans will remember she filed first in 2013, but they managed to make it work. But in 2022, after 28 years together, the couple finally called it quits for good. After years and years of problems, it took Billy Ray shacking up with a much younger woman to definitively end it. Why? Why did Tish fight so hard to keep the marriage together before that?
Because she never wanted to be a divorcée. She said:
“I never wanted to be divorced. For us, you’re in the public eye and the world that we exist in is already so odd and at some times unstable. I wanted to make it work—probably for a little too long — like, for my own mental health. There became a point that, like, I didn’t have a choice.”
So sad… But she’s right, there was no choice. Billy Ray’s heart wasn’t achy or breaky as he was engaged to singer Firerose less than four months after Tish’s April 2022 filing. (That marriage also ended disastrously, but far far faster…)

Tish went on to say the divorce “was tough on everyone”, especially their kids — which include Brandi Cyrus, Trace Cyrus, and Braison Cyrus in addition to Miley and Noah. After they called off their previous divorce filings in 2010 and 2013, she explained:
“My son Trace, for example. He was bummed. He was like, ‘I wish my mom and dad would never get… I wish that wouldn’t have happened’.”
Brandi was also on the podcast, and she backed up Tish, saying she knew the 57-year-old really wanted to stay together for their youngest child, Noah:
“In the prior filings, especially Noah was so young and that was definitely a big thing. My mom really wanted the family to stay together for Noah. But then, you know, once Noah was an adult, I do feel like it was not great. But also, we were all old enough to understand it.”
Sad situation. But it’s important she made the right choice for herself and her family. There are some rifts that can’t be healed.
