Tom Brady has seemingly shared another cryptic quote days after ex-wife Gisele Bündchen’s pregnancy with her first child with boyfriend Joaquim Valente was revealed.
The former NFL star, 47, took to his Instagram Stories on Tuesday, November 5, to share a photo of a card with a lengthy quote that was first spoken by Theodore Roosevelt. “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better,” the quote began.
“The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, and comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming,” the card continued. “But who does actually strive to do the deeds, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”
Tom added a praying hands emoji, a red heart and a sparkle emoji over the photo.
The quote comes from Roosevelt’s 1910 “Man in the Arena” speech, which is also the name of Tom’s 2021 docuseries on ESPN+. He revealed in 2020 that he has lived by the quote since his days at the University of Michigan.
“I have quoted Theodore Roosevelt’s ‘Man in the Arena’ speech since I saw it painted on our weight room wall at UM in 1995. It’s a constant reminder to ignore the noise, buckle my chinstrap, and battle through whatever comes my way,” Tom wrote on X.
The post came days after In Touch confirmed that Gisele, 44, was pregnant and expecting her first child with Joaquim, 35. The former Victoria’s Secret Angel already shares son Benjamin and daughter Vivian with Tom.
“Gisele and Joaquim are happy for this new chapter in their life and they’re looking forward to creating a peaceful and loving environment for the whole family,” a source close to the couple told People on October 28.
Hours after the news broke, Tom — who finalized his divorce from Gisele in October 2022 — seemingly reacted to his ex’s pregnancy with a cryptic Instagram Stories post. The former quarterback shared a photo of a sunset with three red heart emojis as Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” played in the background.
“Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?” the song’s lyrics read.
A source told Page Six on October 30 that Tom was “stunned” by the news and “never imagined” that Gisele would have a baby with Joaquim, whom she began dating in June 2023.
“Tom knew that things were serious between Gisele and Joaquim but he never imagined they would be having a child together,” the insider said. “It just wasn’t something that was on his radar. So when Gisele broke the news to him he was stunned, to say the least.”
However, the source added that “after the initial shock wore off,” Tom became “used to the idea and he’s happy” for his former wife of 13 years.
“At the end of the day, Tom’s sole focus is on his children and his career. What Gisele decides to do with her own life is really none of his business,” the insider concluded.
Gisele met Joaquim in 2021 when he became her jiu-jitsu instructor. They developed a friendship following her divorce from Tom and eventually began their relationship. In March of this year, the supermodel denied rumors that her romance with Joaquim overlapped with her marriage.
“That’s a lie,” she told The New York Times. “This is something that happens to a lot of women who get blamed when they have the courage to leave an unhealthy relationship and are labeled as being unfaithful.”
