Travis Kelce enjoyed a welcome return to NFL form for the Kansas City Chiefs when he inspired them to a 30-24 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 4, but why was he still left angry at the game?
The triple Super Bowl champion and Patrick Mahomes improved their side's record to 8-0 (100%) for the season with the overtime victory on Monday Night Football by combining for 14 receptions and 100 yards from 16 targets.
It was by far the tight end's best display of a tough 2024/25 season but he was left annoyed at himself for fumbling the ball and in the process, fumbling an NFL record too, as he demands more from himself.
"I should have had more," Kelce told reporters of his receptions rate. "It was right after I fumbled the ball. I could have been the first 35 year old to have 15 [receptions] if I didn't drop the ball.
"Myself, personally, did not play great both in pass game [and] run game. I know I came up big on a few plays here and there on that first drive, but after that I just wasn't happy with my performance, even watching it today."
Why has Kelce got better?
Kelce's tough start to the season had fans thinking he was finished and had hit the age wall, but he is proving his critics wrong by making 366 yards from 44 receptions in his last five compared to 69 yards in his opening three games.
So what exactly has changed? According to the 35-year-old it is simply volume as he finds himself targeted more frequently by his quarterback partner in crime.
"I think we're just playing ball, and Pat's been finding me," Kelce said of Mahomes. "I've been finding open voids, and Pat's been trusting it.
"And we've just been on the same page. I didn't think we were ever off of the same page. I think Pat's just throwing me the ball now."
That's consistent with what Mahomes said of Kelce's start to the season following the Atlanta Falcons game, as he pointed out teams were doubling or even tripling upon the tight end and thus leaving him with little room to shine.
Injuries to Rashee Rice, Hollywood Brown and Isiah Pacheco have offered Kelce more volume whilst the recruitment of DeAndre Hopkins will allow more defenders to be drawn away from him to create more openings.
