ITV’s new show Until I Kill You might be their darkest yet, but according to fans, it’s one where actress Anna Maxwell Martin gives a "performance of a lifetime".
A free weekend and a good TV show are among the finer things in life this time of year, and thankfully, you won’t have to spend too long doom scrolling through the streamers as a new series based on the events that occurred between serial killer John Sweeney and his ex-girlfriend Delia Balmer is earning rave reviews.
Following Maxwell Martin, 47, in the lead role of Balmer, and Shaun Evans, 44, as Sweeney, the story shares insight into her nightmare relationship with Sweeney, which included him telling her that he killed his ex-girlfriend and near-fatally attacking Balmer herself.
But their story doesn’t end there, and the four-episode mini-series goes on to examine the failures of the police and judicial system, which resulted in the death of another woman and Balmer having to traumatically face Sweeney in court.
Made for the true crime fanatics and thriller watchers, the show, set in the 90s, has already earned a 7.4/10 rating on IMBb, and it may be all thanks to Maxwell Martin, who fans have been showering in praise for.
Taking to X, viewers shared how impressed they are with the British star’s acting abilities, with one person writing: "Anna Maxwell Martin is outstandingly good in this. What an actor, able to straddle comedy and serious drama so brilliantly. She should be winning everything (and should have been for a long time)."
Another person tweeted on the social media platform: "A hard watch but brilliantly told. An important story. Anna Maxwell Martin giving the performance of her career. And that last image of Delia - so striking."
"Delia Balmer was failed by the police time and again, She is an absolute superstar for being so resilient. Anna Maxwell Martin’ portrayal of her in until I kill you is Oscar worthy (yes I said Oscar lols"’, another impressed fan wrote.
"Anna Maxwell Martin as Delia Balmer #untilikillyou …. A strong, incredible woman, and a true and extraordinary story of how much a survivor suffers and also survives. Best thing I’ve watched for ages!" One said, with another person replying, "Brilliant acting!"
Meanwhile, one X user expressed anger at the judicial system: "Anna Maxwell Martin should win every award. A true story that shows the appalling way she was treated by the police as a victim and why so many fail to come forward. 4 life sentences and parole in 9 years! The justice system is fked!"

SCU)Another person warned others about how intense the show is, admitting they were on the "edge" of their seat: "Two episodes into Until I Kill You and I can’t take it anymore. It’s literal edge of your seat viewing and so intense!!!"
Sweeney was sentenced to life in 2011 for the murder of two women. Melissa Halstead, 33, was his first victim in 1990, whom he killed before brutally dismembering her and disposing of her body in a Rotterdam canal days later.
After attempting to kill Balmer following his confession, he evaded capture and went on to kill Paula Fields, 31, around December 2000, leaving her remains in Regent’s Canal.
