With the holiday season quickly coming up, you might be wondering what Christmas movies might make you laugh, cry and get in the holiday spirit this year. If you ask us, the upcoming book adaptation of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever starring Judy Greer and Pete Holmes and narrated by Lauren Graham, should absolutely be making your list.
The movie, adapted from the Barbara Robinson novel by the same name, follows mom of two Grace (Greer) as she directs her church’s annual Christmas pageant for the very first time. Things then quickly go awry when the Herdmans, aka “the worst kids in the history of the world,” walk their way into lead roles in the show.
In an exclusive clip obtained by SheKnows, Grace is seen facing some pushback from other moms in church after the Herdmans got their starring roles.
“How could you let this happen?” Mrs. Armstrong (played by Janet Wright), who seems to be on bed rest after injuring both her legs, asks.
“It’s not fair that a whole family who doesn’t even go to our church just barged in and took over the pageant,” another mom chimed in. “Injustice was done,” Mrs. Armstrong continues. “We all agree it was a travesty.”
“Because the Herdmans volunteered for the pageant?” Grace asks politely.
“She is referring to the grievous assault on the impartial casting process yesterday,” adds Mrs. Wendelken (played by Danielle Hoetmer).
“With all due respect, nothing about the process has ever been impartial Mrs. Armstrong,” Grace explains. “And as for a grievous assault, I literally pleaded with your children to participate.”
“We were paralyzed with shock,” another mom responds. “But you spoke!” Grace says. “It came in waves,” the mom replies.
“I’m sorry but we’re using really big words to talk about a pageant where the kids just have to stand in the same spot they stand in every year,” Grace then says, trying to calm the situation.
“We take it seriously,” asserts Mrs. Slocum (played by Sarah Constible). “So do I, Mrs. Slocam, that’s why I volunteered.”
“Judging by who you cast as Mary, you apparently don’t,” adds Mrs. Wendelken. “Rebecca, is it possible that as Alice’s mom, you have a personal interest in who plays Mary?” Grace responds, with all the women then gasping.
“The pageant is sacred,” Mrs. Armstrong says, with all of them chiming in that the pageant’s all about “community,” “fundraising,” “Mother Mary” and “tradition.”
“What do you all suggest? That I kick the Herdmans out of the Christmas pageant and keep them out of the church?” Grace responds. “Yes,” they say in unison.
Will Grace finally succumb to the moms’ pressure and kick them out or will she stand by the Herdman despite all their shenanigans? Will have to tune in and see! The Best Christmas Pageant Ever hits theaters on November 8!
