Susan Lorincz, a white Florida resident, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Monday for fatally shooting her Black neighbor, Ajike "A.J." Owens.
What Happened?
The case unfolded in Ocala, Florida, a community about 80 miles northwest of Orlando, and drew national attention that highlighted ongoing racial tensions and questions of self-defense laws.
Lorincz, 60, was convicted in August of killing 35-year-old Owens by firing a single shot from her .380-caliber handgun through her front door in June 2023.
The fatal confrontation was the culmination of an argument between the two neighbors over Owens' children playing in a grassy area near both of their houses.
On Monday, Lorincz was sentenced to 25 years in prison for her manslaughter conviction.
What the Trial Revealed
Prosecutors said the confrontation occurred when Owens, a mother of four young children, had come to Lorincz's home after her children complained that she had thrown roller skates and an umbrella at them, which Lorincz denied.
During trial, testimony showed Lorincz claimed she acted in self-defense after Owens banged on her door and yelled at her.
However, an all-white jury rejected Lorincz's claim, convicting her of manslaughter in August.
Owens' family, who had advocated for the harshest possible sentence, expressed both sorrow and resolve.
"While the pain of losing Ajike, we are hopeful that justice will prevail and that the court will give Susan Lorincz the maximum penalty for her actions," said Owens' mother, Pamela Dias, in an email statement provided to The Associated Press before Monday's sentencing. "Ajike's legacy will live on through her children, and we will continue to fight for justice."
Assistant Public Defender Amanda Sizemore, who represented Lorincz, argued for leniency, citing in court documents mental health issues and claims that Owens was the aggressor during the years-long neighborhood dispute.
The Aftermath of the Shooting
The shooting has since sparked protests in Ocala's Black community, particularly after prosecutors initially delayed charging Lorincz and opted for manslaughter over second-degree murder, which carries a potential life sentence. Critics saw the decision as emblematic of racial inequities in the justice system.
Marion County, which includes Ocala, has a Black population of about 12 percent, according to recent census figures.
This case also comes as increased gun violence has been seen across the country. Since the start of this year, 15,155 people have been killed by firearms with 28,985 injured, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
