A new film from the mind behind the 2020 reimagining of The Invisible Man is coming to theaters this month, and the first reactions are creeping onto social media.

Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man stars Julia Garner as Charlotte and Christopher Abbott as Blake in this tale of a family whose remote farmhouse is attacked by an unseen animal.

The film's another spin on a classic tale from Whannell, who's taking on an 83-year-old story, which was first brought to the big screen in 1941 by George Waggner, starring Lon Chaney Jr. and Claude Rains.

Now, those first reactions to Whannell's take have started to hit social media, and it seems the critics aren't yet tired of the story as Andrew J. Salazar of Discussing Film describes Wolf Man as "a pulse-pounding, super fun take on classic werewolf cinema."

Leigh Whannell's WOLF MAN is a pulse-pounding, super fun take on classic werewolf cinema. Less is more in this effective tale of generational guilt. The "infected" Wolf Man design also works far better on-screen.

Salazar's not alone in his thinking as Tessa Smith of Mama's Geeky says Whannell's film is "not just terrifying, it packs an emotional punch." Smith calls the technical choices in Wolf Man "a masterclass in horror" and that she "found [herself] jumping out of [her] skin and then shedding tears."

Wolf Man is not just terrifying, it packs an emotional punch. I found myself jumping out of my skin and then shedding tears. The acting is top notch and the cinematography is insane. The way the camera switches POVs provides a masterclass in horror. I loved it! #WolfManMovie pic.twitter.com/GzVIo62Bf9

More praise for Wolf Man comes from Rachel Leishman, who says Wolf Man is "a suspenseful thrill from start to finish", and Hunter Bolding says it's a "truly excellent horror film that gives you body horror, familial horror, and some gruesome effects."

#WolfMan will leave you afraid of the dark! Watched this movie with my feet up on the air because I was terrified of what could grab my ankles. Just a suspenseful thrill from start to finish. Christopher Abbott is a star and I love him so much! pic.twitter.com/V6frodldjq

Wolf Man is everything that I wanted and then some. A truly excellent horror film that gives you body horror, familial horror, and some gruesome effects. The entire cast is excellent, but Christopher Abbott takes it up to another level as a classic “character”. @WolfManMovie25 pic.twitter.com/AqvL4sO404

The first reactions suggest that Whannell's Wolf Man may be a hit in the same way the original film was in 1941. The original has a Certified Fresh rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes from 43 reviews, but there's still an embargo on reviews for the latest installment, so only time will tell.

Wolf Man hits theaters on January 17, 2025.
