Woman Thrifts Candle Holder for $4, Then She Discovers Its Actual Value

1 day ago 3

A woman who thrifted a candle holder for just $4 was delighted with her purchase, but she was left completely stunned when she discovered its real value.

In a now viral Reddit post, user u/AlarmingReference777 shared a picture of the white porcelain candle holder that she bought at a Salvation Army store on December 26. The simple design features a pebbled texture with small circular vents to create a warm glow when a candle is lit inside it.

The 43-year-old Reddit user, from Western Massachusetts, told Newsweek that she bought it because she "thought it was a cool looking candle holder." It offers an elegant design. Not to mention, it was only $4 so she couldn't go wrong with that.

However, when she got home, she looked up the name of the brand that was printed on the underside of the candle holder. She had no recollection of it, Korallen-Windlicht, a German company selling porcelain goods. But she was stunned to see the same item listed for $1,903 on a resale site.

"When I got home, I used Google lens to find it online," she said. "I wasn't looking for how much it could be purchased for when brand new, I just wanted some information on it. I was shocked when I saw the price though. I had no idea it was sold for $1,903."

After making this discovery, she shared a picture on Reddit, along with a screen grab of the website listing. The post went viral, and in just a matter of days it has generated more than 15,000 votes and 280 comments.

Many social media users, and even her partner, have encouraged the Reddit user to sell her thrifted treasure and make a profit. Despite their suggestions, she told Newsweek that she plans to keep it as it's "beautiful and super cool."

She continued: "I don't go thrifting to resell, I just like finding interesting things. The bottom and top were taped together when I found it, and inside was a small pillar candle, which was absolutely not the right kind for this piece.

"Most of the reactions from people were telling me to sell it—and maybe I would if it wasn't so expensive. I just cannot imagine having the kind of money to buy a $1,900 candle holder and then donating it," user u/AlarmingReference777 said.

Among the hundreds of comments on the viral Reddit post, many people praised her thrifting discovery and were fascinated by its real value.

One comment reads: "Great score! It's very pretty."

Another person wrote: "That's really cool! I feel like just knowing that makes it a cool piece to own."

While another Reddit user commented: "I could not imagine spending almost $2K on a candle holder."
