Agatha All Along‘s Showrunner Really Wanted You to Know Wanda Wouldn’t Show Up

Much like the tides, Agatha All Along‘s finale ushered in a wave of fan theories, old and new, by Marvel fans as they sit in anticipation of what comes next with the next phase of shows and films. While folks are no doubt spinning yarn on cork boards connecting loose threads in the Disney+ show, its showrunner has come forward to make it exceedingly clear that Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff was always intended to remain dead in the show’s continuity.

In a spoiler-filled interview with Variety, showrunner Jac Schaeffer detailed the journey Agatha All Along’s writing team underwent crafting the show’s narrative. During their conversation, Schaeffer was again asked about the proverbial elephant in the room: the Scarlet Witch. In the past, Schaeffer made it abundantly clear that despite Agatha All Along being a sequel to WandaVision, no amount of witchcraft would lead to her making a surprise appearance on account of her status post-Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

“The discussion during the rollout is complicated. If I felt it served the watch [of the show] to say, ‘Wanda’s not in the show,’ I would have just said that. But it’s my feeling that it then becomes the conversation,” Schaeffer told Variety. “I’m not interested in stringing anybody along. If you look at my comments, they were pretty clear that she wasn’t going to show up. But the sort of hard-lining it, I think, is no fun. People want to have their theories. I don’t want to spoil anybody’s party. I just want to gently curate it.”

Schaeffer got ahead of any more Wanda-centric questions by saying she does not know if Marvel plans to revisit the character in a future film. Although the news may disappoint fans eager for the troubled mother’s return, Schaeffer did offer a tidbit about her. Specifically, an alternate ending tag for WandaVision that was designed to segue seamlessly into her role in Multiverse of Madness.

“Initially, Doctor Strange was going to appear in the tag for WandaVision. It’s Wanda sitting on the porch of that cabin, and she’s rocking peacefully,” she said. “And you know how Strange can do those circles around someone, and make them go somewhere? The circle starts around her, like she’s going to be teleported somewhere, and she stops it, so Strange has to show up in person.”

She continued: “I just loved that so much, that Wanda would be like, ‘No, I’m not going to go where you want to teleport me. You’re going to have to come to my door.’ It was a good one, but another tag took its place.”

Agatha All Along is streaming on Disney+.
