Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have fans in hysterics as one of their interviews has become the internet’s favourite meme.

The press tour for the new Wicked film has been filled with bizarre moments including emotional outbursts from the two lead stars and drama as Cynthia slammed the fan-edit of the Wicked poster.

The tumultuous promotional tour has now taken an even stranger turn as a question from interviewers has become a meme.

In an interview with Out Magazine, journalist Tracey Gilcrest told the lead actors that a key song from the musical was empowering fans in a unique way.

‘This week people are taking the lyrics of Defying Gravity and really holding space with that, and feeling power in that,’ she said.

Cynthia clutched her chest and looked emotional as she replied: ‘I didn’t know that was happening.’

‘I’ve seen it yeah yeah,’ replied the interviewer.

‘That’s really powerful, that’s what I wanted. I didn’t know that was happening,’ said Cynthia who then looked overwhelmed as she looked over at Ariana who went to hold her hand and instead clutched her index finger.

‘I’ve seen it on a couple of posts, I don’t know how widespread it is. But I’m in queer media so,’ she said.

Fans were baffled by the emotional response from the stars and Ariana’s choice to tenderly hold one of her fingers and immediately took to social media to comment on the video.

‘Ariana holding Cynthia’s one finger is killing me,’ Ddabrielle commented on Instagram.

I’m actually obsessed like truly nothing was said at all,’ C.orinna commented.

‘Lol this is way too sentimental, what does “taking the lyrics and holding space with them” even mean?? 😂’ said spectatorsceptic13.

‘What the hell is even going on / being talked about,’ said annaspanakopita.

The internet then went a little bit wild as the interview went viral, and quickly fans began to ‘hold space’ for the most popular song in the soundtrack.

Ariana made the decision to use her full name for the credits of the film, which fans found a rather sweet change in the movie.

Instead of going by the name she’s become famous for in pop music, the Into You singer has gone by the name Ariana Grande-Butera.

She told Justin Hill on The Streaming Service podcast: ‘Technically it’s my little girl name, it’s technically little Ari name, but no I just feel like this experience was such a homecoming for me.

Wicked Part One is available in cinemas now.
