Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning collected Golden Globes for the controversial Netflix show Baby Reindeer at a star-studded ceremony held in California last night
Baby Reindeer teased in trailer from NetflixThe real-life inspiration behind Baby Reindeer, Fiona Harvey, blasted the hit Netflix series after it won big at the Golden Globes.
Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning scooped gongs at the glitzy bash in California, with Gadd bagging best television limited series and Gunning hailed as best supporting female actor on TV for her portrayal of Scottish stalker Martha. Raging last night, 59-year-old Harvey said: "Netflix has flogged this story to death while my life has been a living hell."
As he accepted his award, Gadd gushed to the Beverly Hilton Hotel crowd: "I’m so grateful to Netflix for giving me the chance to tell this messed-up story to the world" and poured out his heart saying, "Honestly, the way this city, the way you guys have embraced this show is unbelievable. It means the absolute world to me, to us.
"A lot of people sometimes ask me why a show this dark has gone on to be the success that it's had. I think in a lot of ways, people were kind of crying out for something that spoke to the kind of painful inconsistencies of being human," reports the Daily Record.
He added: "I think right now, when the world's in the state that it's in and people are really struggling, we need stories that speak to the complicated and difficult nature of our times. Any story when done right, it's universal, and all the weird, idiosyncratic struggles we go through on a daily basis are just as worthy of being committed to screen as any."
Gadd, fresh off his win and wrapped up in controversy due to the lawsuit against Netflix by Harvey, who insists she's the "real" Martha Scott, spoke out cautiously: "I can't go into too much detail on these matters. 2024 was a crazy year of ups and downs and ins and outs. It was quite hard at times to find my feet."
Gadd, reflecting on his intense role, confessed: "It took a long time to unwire myself from Baby Reindeer." Delving deeper into his experience, he shared: "When it finished it was all-consuming and I didn't know what to do with myself. I was so thin when I shot it. I was 68.8kg and I'd lost a third of my body weight."
He also opened up about his health struggle post-filming: "I had to get used to eating properly again because it unlocked the trapdoor to a lot of sh*t that I'd been through in my life. I had to figure out how to close that trap door again."
The show, Baby Reindeer, centers on Gadd being pursued by a relentless stalker and sexually assaulted by a mentor. Its credits begin assertively with, "This is a true story." Harvey, currently engaged in a legal battle with Netflix for £130 million over defamation, dismissed the series, declaring: "The show is ridiculous."
Actress Jessica Gunning nearly had an embarrassing stumble on her way to snag her trophy on the night, quipping: "You almost saw my Golden Globes." Backstage, the star reflected on her journey, saying: "Baby Reindeer has changed my life in ways that I can't even explain... I know the eight-year-old me would be chuffed to bits."
