Beloved Indigenous TV and radio presenter Candy Devine, known for her work spanning decades, has died aged 85.

Born Faye Ann Guivarra, the broadcaster, singer and actress died on October 31. Her cause of death was no disclosed.

Her son, well-known Australian celebrity chef Alastair McLeod, announced the news in a heartfelt social media post, sharing touching memories and photos of his mother earlier this week.

“Our dear mummy passed away on Thursday after a life of laughter and music and singing,” McLeod wrote on Instagram.

The tribute was soon flooded with condolences, including from high-profile media personalities.

“Laughter. Music. Singing. What a beautiful legacy,” commented radio host Chrissie Swan.

“I hope my children will one day use these magical words about me. I can feel that even though your heart is broken, you know how lucky you were.”

Television host Peter Everett added that Devine had been “incredibly proud” of her son.

“I truly am sorry to hear the passing of your darling Mother. She’ll never be far from your side. ❤️Huge blessings to you.”

Devine began her career in Australia in the 1960s with a role in the iconic TV series Skippy the Bush Kangaroo.

After moving to Northern Ireland with her husband, Donald McLeod, she made her mark in broadcasting, becoming one of the first presenters at Downtown Radio.

She worked at the station for nearly 40 years before retiring, earning an MBE in 2014 for her contributions to radio.

Devine returned to Australia following the death of her husband in 2012 and moved to Brisbane.

Tributes from colleagues and fans have poured in, with Downtown Radio’s Stuart Robinson calling her “a one-of-a-kind broadcaster who brought joy to the lives of so many people.”
